Onions make final sprint for the longest day
Now that the longest day is in sight, the bulging process is about to begin. Almost everywhere in the Netherlands the onions are growing fast and the haircut is still being expanded quite a bit. And that is also very necessary given the sometimes fledgling crop.
A moist soil, warm days and a lot of sunshine hours. The onions will not do better for the time of year. And that can also be seen in the stand of the onions. Many participants of the BoerenBusiness croptour have already had their last weed spraying and have already planned disease control.
Martijn Derikx from Ysselsteyn (L) has already closed his onions and will be spraying fungus for the 4th time tomorrow. His onion plot is already closed and has already started bulbs. The drip irrigation is turned on.
At Arjen Jakobs from Wezup (Dr) the onions are also well on their way. He has done his last weed control and got his plot as good as clean with the sprays. He plans to perform his first disease control next week. His onions have just started the 5th pipe.
Reinder Hogenhout from Kimswerd in Friesland says that the onions are also well on their way. He has his onions in the 4th flag stage and probably has all the fertilizer on them, he is considering applying another foliar fertilizer. His aim was to have all the fertilizers ready for the longest day and now seems to have succeeded. After the weekend, he wants to start spraying the onions with his first disease.
