The season started poorly for onion growers due to a cold soil and crust due to heavy precipitation. If we now look at the plots that participate in the Boerenbusiness Crop tour, there is little to see.
The longest day has passed and that means that the onion spends more energy on the bulging and less on the formation of the foliage. Growers from the south of the country send photos of their plots, which makes many growers jealous. Growth in the center of the country has also picked up well in recent days.
René Haaijer from Veelerveen immediately set the bar high and was the first to send the photos of his onion fields in the Gewastour group app at the end of the week. Last week, he showed that his 7-pipe onions had started to bulb, with the rows just barely visible. The crop is now completely closed and the rows can hardly be found anymore. The red onions on the plot next to that of the Gewastour also look good.

The onions in Flevoland from Aeres Hogeschool Dronten started a little later, but they have also started to grow strongly. Due to last week's spraying, some onions fell out, but the onions are in good condition.
The onions at Arjen Jakobs also turn a nice green color, but they have not yet started bulbs. Arjen announces that they now have fifth or sixth pipes. He does not expect that the plot will be completely closed and that you will still see the double rows.
