Dutch Crop tour weather - week 26

Potato and onion growers keep looking up

June 28, 2022 - Robin de Winter

Despite the rainfall last weekend, the growers of French fries and onions regularly look up for a dark cloud. The higher temperature and sun have evaporated a lot of moisture. While at the moment moisture is crucial for the growth of the potatoes after the tuberization and bulbing of the onions.

From Friday to Monday, most participants of the Boerenbusiness Dutch Crop tour between 10 and 35 mm of precipitation. Many growers were satisfied with the millimeters that had fallen, but the crop is still far from sufficient everywhere.

Keep growth steady
Jacco van Liere from Dronten (FL) says that he had 18 millimeters of precipitation between Friday and Monday. This was not enough for him and he therefore has his crop tour plot and irrigated with 15 millimeters. "I irrigate to keep the tubers even. I'm afraid that with the drought and heat, one tuber will continue to grow and the other will stand still. Now add some water and then it will be enough, I expect."

City millimeters
Dronten (Flevoland) 18
Eenrum (Groningen) 24
Three roads (Zeeland) 24
Veelerveen (Groningen) 22
Kimswerd (Friesland) 20
Fijnaart (North Brabant) 30
Wezup (Drenthe) 25
Hellevoetsluis (South Holland) 30
Noordwolde (Friesland) 10
Oeffelt (North Brabant) 35
Escharen (North Brabant) 30

Daan Janssen from Escharen says that he received 20 millimeters of precipitation on the plot last weekend and Monday. His clay soils can continue for the time being, but that does not apply to his sandy soils. "I'm running with a single reel now, but if it stays dry I'll irrigate with four or five reels at the end of the week and continue another week with all nine."

The soil sensor from AgroExact indicates that the potato crop needs moisture at Herman Schlepers.

Herman Schlepers from Dronten (Fl) says that he would also have liked more precipitation. Unfortunately, only a meager 14 millimeters fell and his soil moisture sensor shows that the amount of moisture has a low value, which may affect growth. Schlepers is already irrigating on plots in Oldebroek (Fl), which is a bit further away. He is also considering watering his potatoes in Dronten. In Lelystad he grows on plots with coarse sand and has filled the ditches there in order to get water to the roots via the drainage.
