Dutch Crop tour weekend 30

Ironing onions already underway

28 July 2022 - Robin de Winter

A week earlier than last year, the first onions went flat. As we also see with potatoes, the onion season is somewhat earlier than last year. The MH is already installed in most places and the thrips and mildew are well under control by the participants of the Crop Tour.

While the onions in Friesland are still standing upright, the first ones in the south of the country can already be seen ironing. Many growers applied the MH at the end of last week (around July 22). While a grower is pleased with the 25 millimeters that fell in the past two weeks, growers in the north only received half a millimeter.

Students from the Aeres University of Applied Sciences say that the onions at the school farm are lean with an uneven position, but that they are already bulbing quite a bit. In the month of July, the onions received only 15 millimeters of rainfall, so irrigation is now on the schedule. Meanwhile, weeds are now being weeded.

Klaasjan Boer from Kortgene (Zeeland) says that he has had 25 millimeters of precipitation in two weeks. It was necessary because the onions immediately resumed growth. Boer cannot irrigate, so the shower was more than welcome. The MH has been in place for a week now and the onions are already quite ironed. Boer indicates that it will not be a top yield, but hopes that the rain will give them a small growth spurt while they empty the foliage.

The onions of Geert Jilissen from Oeffelt (North Brabant) are also starting to iron. Half of his acreage is completely ironed. Jilissen can irrigate and has turned the reel on the plots that have not yet been ironed. He also manages thrips and mildew well, even though the pressure in his area is high.

In Kimswerd (Friesland) near Reinder Hogenhout, the onions are still standing. He hopes they will continue to grow for a while and wants to water them again at the end of the week. Last week he only had half a millimeter of rain.
