Dutch Crop tour potato - Week 36

Potato harvesting has finally started

9 September 2022 - Robin de Winter

For many growers, the soil was too dry to harvest potatoes. The precipitation of recent days and the millimeters that are still expected have changed that. When will the Innovators be harvested on the plots of the Boerenbusiness Dutch Crop tour.

While some growers are waiting for clearer weather, other growers are allowed an extra 30 millimeters before they can think about harvesting. And yet another group of growers had started harvesting, but could make good use of the showers given the harsh conditions. Precipitation will continue locally for several days. For example, the millimeters that fell for the growers of the Gewastour before Wednesday ranged from 5 to 60 millimeters.

Most Crop Tour plots are dead and almost ready to harvest. The first is probably in Dronten at potato grower Van Liere. The majority of growers will harvest their plot of potatoes within two weeks. Not everyone is busy with the ware potato harvest. Jacob Branderhorst says that in his neighborhood nobody is busy with the potatoes, but the onions are rolling over the harvesting mat. More than 30 millimeters fell in two days and he was therefore unable to continue in the onions at first.
René Mesken from the Frisian Appelscha started harvesting before the rain on Tuesday. After the shower of 16 millimeters on Wednesday night, it rained less and harvested well. He has now had 30 millimeters and the harvester is standing still.

Herman Schlepers from Dronten still has his plot with Innovator green and still irrigated at the beginning of last week (week 35). Like other years, he wants to start with the potato harvest around the third week of September and indicates that he is still growing in kilos.

Potatoes from Herman Schlepers from Dronten (Fl) made on 8-9-2022.
