More yield security with Verango

14 April 2023

Verango is a relatively new nematicide based on the active ingredient fluopyram. It is effective against various nematodes and ensures a more vital crop.

The current market conditions make optimization of potato cultivation even more interesting. It pays to realize the maximum yields on the available land. Unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer resources available with which to secure the proceeds. The current nematicides in potato cultivation will also come under increasing pressure in the future.

A relatively new nematicide is Verango. Although little experience has been gained with it in practice, this means may well offer a number of interesting benefits for practice in the coming years.

Effective against nematodes
Verango has a good effect against potato cyst nematodes (Globodera rostochiensis and pallida) and root lesion nematodes (Pratylenchus penetrans). Furthermore, an English study has established that Verango has a comparable effect to Vydate® on free-living root nematodes (Trichodorides). This effect has been assessed based on TRV (tobacco rattle virus) infestation on the harvested tubers. The effect on root knot nematodes (Meloidogyne chitwoodi and fallax) will be further investigated in the coming years, because the trial data for this are still too limited. However, there are positive experiences from practice with the use of Verango against root knot nematodes.

More vital crop
In addition to the nematicide effect, Verango produces a more vital crop. This makes Alternaria and Black speckle less likely to strike. This always translates into a higher yield.

Practical experiences
Last growing season, Bayer and 13 potato growers gained practical experience with Verango. In these field trials, the standard soil treatment was compared with the standard plus Verango (where the standard was sometimes also untreated).

For the potato harvest, lifting was carried out in six 4,5-metre locations in both test strips. The yield of this was determined later. The outcome of this is as follows:

  • Verango has a positive effect on yield of an average of 8,9%
  • Ten plots were on sandy soil, where the additional yield was an average of 11,8%
  • The Fontane variety was grown on five plots, where the additional yield was an average of 12,2%

Consulting & application
Verango is liquid and can be applied both full field and row treatment. An even distribution through the soil is important!

Full field application

  • Spray the product evenly over the land and then work it in. It can also be used during tillage prior to planting.
  • Work the agent at a depth of 10 to 20 cm. The application can be carried out from three days before planting.
  • Dosage: 0,625 l/ha

Row treatment

  • Administer the product in the planting room during planting using equipment mounted on the planting machine.
  • Can be mixed with agents based on azoxystrobin (including Amistar®), fluxapyroxad (Allstar®) and Serenade. Common liquid fertilizers are also easy to mix.
  • Dosage: 0,625 l/ha
