Dutch Crop tour weekend 18

Onions and potatoes are flying in at a rapid pace

5 May 2023 - Robert Reijerse

Arable farmers have made optimal use of the dry weather this week to make up for the backlog in sowing and potato planting. The precipitation on Friday is a bummer in many parts of the country. The growers participating in the Boerenbusiness Crop tours have also made significant progress. All ten participating plots with yellow onions have now been sown, while the first plots with the potato variety Innovator have also been planted.

The last Gewastour plots for onions were sown this week. On the plots that were sown two weeks ago, the first plants are already showing above the ground. The onion plots on sandy soil are more developed than on clay soils. Due to the low temperature, growth has not really started yet.

Onions go in fast
Onion growers Jan Berend Biesheuvel from Zeewolde (Fl), Ruud Vossebeld from Beemte Broekland (Gld) and Reinder Hogenhout from Kimswerd (Fr) have been busy sowing their onion plots in recent days. Biesheuvel sowed his plot on May 2 with the variety Viggo from Hazera. At the beginning of this week, Vossebeld milled his beds of 1,5 meters and sowed them in recent days. After the heavy rainfall in recent weeks, Hogenhout has also started preparing land and sowing its sugar beets and onions. As a result, the pace is good for the growers. The first parcel of onions is at the top of Wezup. These onions were sown April 14.

First crop tour of potatoes into the ground
The first growers to participate in the Gewastour potatoes have started planting. Brian Salome from IJzendijke (ZL) is one of them. The installation of the Innovator goes as follows. On the plot, the green manure crop Facelia, which was sown last summer, is incorporated with a flail mower in the front linkage. Behind the tractor, Salomé has a Lemken Karat stubble plow. This is followed by the combination of the cultivator and planter. Salomé grows the potatoes using non-inversion tillage (NKG). "I planted potatoes last Monday, but now (Thursday) it's going a lot better due to the sun and wind we've had the past few days. I hope to have planted my potatoes before the weekend."

The other potato growers are also busy planting their acreage, but have not yet started on the Gewastour plots.
