Learn from last growing season with performance data

9 May 2023

The success of an arable farm largely depends on its ability to learn and adapt to changing conditions. One of the most important tools in this learning process is to analyze data from the previous growing season. By carefully studying this data, growers can determine the strengths and weaknesses of their fields, identify trends and develop strategies to improve their performance.

Last season's Performance Map uses colors to show where the most and least biomass has grown over the entire year. Red indicates a growth of less than 100% of the average biomass and green is more than 100% of the average biomass on this particular plot. The extreme percentages are listed in the narrow legend bar at the bottom of the screen.

The advantage of this Performance Map is that you have a quick first impression of the plot when renting/exchanging/buying. In addition, if you see a deviation in a certain place in the current season, you can quickly look back to see whether this was also the case last year and, therefore, you have a structural soil problem and it is not an annual or crop influence. In the cultivation of potatoes and onions, the amount of above-ground biomass does not directly say anything about the physical crop yield, but there is certainly a certain relationship.

Example of a Performance Map over 2022, where the edges lag behind at 73% of the average, while the top left part of the plot has a biomass yield of 107%.

Compare lots
BioScope has developed the so-called Static Performance Map in order to be able to easily compare the amount of biomass on plots for cultivation in 2022. To do this, press the 'has' to the right of the legend bar. With this static map, all fields are displayed in a color range of 50% to 150%. If the 'hash' is clicked one more time, you will return to the regular dynamic Performance Map.

The Elevation Map
The Elevation Map within FieldScout is displayed based on the AHN4 (Current Elevation File Netherlands). Different colors are used in the legend to show centimeters above or below NAP, whereby enclosed lows and/or the drainage direction become easily and simply available.
