Dutch Crop tour potato - week 21

Potatoes are finally going into the ground at a rapid pace

24 May 2023 - Robert Reijerse

Potato planting is progressing at a rapid pace on the plots participating in the Boerenbusines Gewastour. At several potato growers, the soil was finally competent enough. The first potatoes of the Innovator variety are also emerging elsewhere.

Due to the precipitation in April and May, potato planting started later than in previous years. Every potato grower is now in full swing. Those who are not busy on their Gewastour plot, will drive the circles on another plot. The Gewastour plots in Woldendorp, Zeewolde, Steenbergen and Elst have now been planted.

The Gewastour plot was planted in Zeewolde near Thomas Zandee on 18 May. Prior to potato planting, 5 tons of gypsum was spread per hectare and 10 tons of chicken manure was applied. "We started planting as soon as possible. The soil is on the coarse side, but acceptable." The potatoes are planted with a cup planter with a front cultivator and treated against rhizoctonia during planting, because they leave later for the fresh chips. The potatoes are planted at a distance of 34 centimeters with pot size 35/50.

Wim de Witte from Steenbergen has also planted his Gewastour plot. The potatoes were taken out of the refrigerator three days before planting. As a result, the potatoes were still hard and there were no germs on them. The potatoes are planted at a distance of 26 centimeters with pot size 45/50.

The Gewastour plot in Elst has also been planted. One day before planting, the plot is cleared because of weeds. "The ground fell nicely and the potatoes are in it nicely." The potatoes are planted at a distance of 28 centimetres. The potatoes will probably be milled at the end of the week.

Arable farm Johannes Kerkhovenpolder has also planted the Gewastour plot. The plot was first loosened with a cultivator and then milled. The potatoes are planted all-in-one. As a result, the ridges no longer need to be milled afterwards.

In the Johannes Kerkhovenpolder (GR) the soil is finally capable enough to plant potatoes.

In IJzendijke, Brian Salome is busy milling the potatoes. The potatoes were planted on May 3 and the first shoots are already poking through the back. It is therefore urgent that the potato ridges are milled. During the milling of the ridges, the basic fertilization is also carried out via row fertilization.
