The moist soil in combination with the temperature ensures that the onions have a lot of growth. You have to, because the month of June is already in sight. However, the first spray boom is already running on a plot.
In Kimswerd it rained last Monday, which benefits the onions. However, the onions in Zeewolde are irrigated to keep them growing. In Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, the dust cover is sprayed, so that the onions can continue to grow.
In Kimswerd (Friesland) the onions received 8 millimeters of precipitation last Monday, which means that the growth is good. The onions are now flagging. "Because of last Monday's rainfall, the onions continue to grow nicely. I was able to carry out weed control on the black soil. I can keep the weeds under control," says a satisfied Reinder Hogenhout.
Irrigate onions
On the crop tour plot in Zeewolde (Flevoland), the onions are irrigated with a dose of 10 millimetres. Not because of crust formation, but because it is late spring and grower Jan Berend Biesheuvel wants to keep his onions going. The onions are currently in the first pipe. "I think it's important that the crop continues to grow smoothly, given the late spring and sowing time. Here in southern Flevoland it also dries nicely due to the wind."
In Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, Jacky Dieleman sprayed his barley to death in the onions this week. The barley was sown between the rows of onions to prevent dusting. "The onions are now in the first pipe and the second pipe is on its way, so now was the time to spray the dust cover. There are many problems here in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen with the bean fly in onion plots," Dieleman adds.
On the Drentse Zand in Wezup, the weather is very fertile for onions, grower Arjen Jakobs notes. Other crops are also growing fast. The onions were sown first of the Crop Tour and now have a second pipe.
