Crop tour Weather - Week 27

Crops with a historically dry month into the summer

3 July 2023 - Robert Reijerse

It is not surprising that crops such as chips potatoes and seed onions lag behind in growth on average, given the weather statistics for June. Despite some strong thunderstorms, the month of June was very dry.

Despite a lot of precipitation in some provinces, last June was the driest June month since 1962, or 61 years ago. In the southeast and south of the Netherlands, the plots still enjoyed a high number of millimeters that came close to the long-term average. Other parts of the Netherlands could only add between 10 and 20 measurable millimeters over the entire month. Locally, no more than 5 to 10 millimeters fell in the coastal provinces. With an average of 24 millimeters of precipitation over the country compared to the normal 66 millimeters, the month was very dry.
