Crop tour weekend 31

Reels are already working overtime despite a wet July

31 July 2024 - Jesse Torringa

The large amount of precipitation we have had this growing season has evaporated quickly with the summer weather. The crops are working hard at this stage of growth and occasionally struggle. Some potato plots in particular are already wearing out quite quickly. While July was above average wet.

With an average of 108 millimeters in July, this month was above average wet, according to the KNMI. The long-term average is 78 millimeters. Particularly in the province of North Brabant, a lot of precipitation fell in some areas, but also in the north and east of our country sometimes double the monthly amount. This mainly happened in the first two weeks of this month. It remained dry throughout the Netherlands for only 5 days, while so far we have not experienced any tropical or prolonged heat this growing season.

The picture surrounding moisture in the ground has now completely changed. The wet spores have dried and make way for thick clods and hard clay on the heavier soils. There are also several reels already spinning potatoes and onions on various Crop Tour plots. Onion grower Peter Holster started irrigating his yellow onions on the Crop Tour plot in Marknesse (Flevoland) on Monday evening. It starts in time to maintain contact with the moisture in the ground.

In Marknesse the reel is running on onions again for the first time this season.

A little further south in the same province, onion grower Jan Berend Biesheuvel also irrigates his crop tour plot in Zeewolde. He gives up 20 millimeters and started irrigation on Tuesday. He says that the onion crop needs water and that the hose may be rolled out again next week. "If you want to irrigate completely perfectly, then you are already late. The plot was really in need of it. We will irrigate again next week if it stays dry, but it depends on whether there is rain. The weather forecast remains unchanged. change quite a bit.”

In Zeewolde, large cracks from the drought were already visible in the ground on the plot.

Several other growers from the Crop Tour also indicate that the soil is quickly becoming drier with the current temperature. In addition, the crops work very hard at this growth stage to cool themselves and continue to grow. Some precipitation is forecast for Thursday, but if those millimeters turn out to be low, several more rainfalls are expected in the country this weekend.

At the beginning of this week, there was still sufficient moisture at the roots of the seed onions on the Crop tour plot in Kimswerd, Friesland.

In Lelystad (Flevoland), the crop tour plot of potatoes was also irrigated last Monday and Tuesday. Potato growers Adriaan Wortman and Philip Kroes indicated that the crop is declining and that they are trying to maintain growth. "We planted the plot early (early April) and the crop is already starting to wear out. There are already quite a few kilos under it, but a lot still needs to be done. Hopefully we will keep the crop going with the moisture we provide. give now."

The potato crop in Lelystad has started to fade.
