Dutch Crop tour Onions - week 39

Busy, but also good week for onion growers

26 September 2024 - Jesse Torringa

The onion growing season may have been difficult from the start, but the same cannot be said for the harvest period. The harvesting and loading conditions have been good over the past two weeks and onion growers have taken full advantage of this, resulting in a major boost to the 2024 onion harvest.

The onion harvest went very smoothly in recent weeks, according to the growers of the Boerenbusiness Dutch Crop tour on. The first onions were already harvested in early September and the rest followed quickly in recent weeks. Normally, the onion harvest comes in more stages and you see a difference from the south to the north of the Netherlands. But due to the late sowing and the same sowing dates because of the wet spring, the harvest is fairly even.

This is also reflected in the Crop Tour. The first growers had already started at the beginning of September grub and loading, but onion growers Hubert Linders from Nederweert in Limburg and Klaasjan Boer from Kortgene (Zeeland) only did this in mid-September. In the middle and north of the country, a great many plots were also being harvested around the same time. Within a week, the majority of the participating growers had their onions in the swath. For example, onion growers Reinder Hogenhout from Kimswerd in Friesland and Ruud Vossebeld from Beemte Broekland (Gelderland) harvested their onions one after the other. Most agree: the harvesting conditions and those for loading were very favourable.

Onion grower Ruud Vossebeld has also loaded his yellow onions after a few days in the field. "The crop was also ready and completely dead," says Vossebeld after a visit to the plot. He says that it was a challenging season with the weather conditions, among other things, but that he is not dissatisfied with how it turned out in the end. "It has become a nice batch and there is little coarseness in it, but the quality is good."

Onion grower Klaasjan Boer also did not wait long to load after harvesting. There was a short week in between and last weekend the onions were stored there.

Onion grower Jacky Dieleman from Philippine in Zeeland has the onions in storage. He was one of the first to harvest the onions at the beginning of September, but did not have time to load the onions due to the precipitation at that time.
