Phytophthora cultivation regulations tightened

21 March 2025

After the successful approach to the potato disease phytophthora infestans in 2024, the cultivation regulations for 2025 have been further tightened. Through an integrated approach and close cooperation between breeders, growers, traders and processors, sustainable control of this disease is being pursued. Discover the most important measures and how they contribute to healthy potato cultivation.

The measures against the potato disease phytophthora infestans were further tightened at the beginning of 2025. After the problems in potato cultivation in 2023 and 2024, various additional measures were already taken last year, such as early burning (organic cultivation) and combining and alternating agents (conventional cultivation). This strategy was effective; in 2024 the population of the most worrying variant of phytophthora decreased.

Continue new working method
It is therefore important that the new method is continued by all parties in the chain: breeders, growers, traders and processors. In addition, the cultivation regulations have been tightened again in 2025 to prevent new outbreaks.

The most crucial measures for 2025:

Integrated approach necessary
Successful control of phytophthora requires an integrated approach based on all five pillars of cultivation:

  1. Crop rotation
  2. Resilient breeds
  3. Soil management
  4. Monitoring in season
  5. Targeted control

De updated flyer of BO arable farming contains detailed information about all measures per pillar.
