Mechanical weed control effective

1 May 2025

Mechanical weed control in potato cultivation was extensively researched in the 90s. Due to the disappearance of chemical weed control agents and the increasing demand for sustainable cultivation methods, this theme is topical again. Knowledge from the past still proves to be valuable. Research shows that mechanical weed control in potatoes is effective on all types of soil.

In the past, extensive research has been conducted on mechanical weed control in arable farming. Between 1990 and 1993, research was conducted specifically for potatoes at various locations in the Netherlands.

This old research has been rewritten in the article 'Integrated weed control in potatoes', published on Crkls. There are several possibilities to achieve a good result, namely:

  • Leave row tillers (after emergence)
  • Earthing up
  • Back hoeing
  • Shedding of ridges

Main conclusions

  • Effective mechanical weed control strategies for potatoes without yield loss are possible on all soil types.
  • Under-cultivating a potato crop that is too large (largest leaf 35 cm) leads to yield loss.
  • A drift of rye on valley soil can be controlled mechanically and does not affect weed control.
  • Greater and more efficient efforts are required from the grower to effectively control weeds mechanically.

Practical tips
For mechanical weed control, suitable moments must be used. This requires a greater and more effective effort compared to chemical control.

Delays due to weather conditions can cause the weeds and/or crop to become too large, requiring a different approach or leaving the weeds to be removed manually.

The research took place in the 90s. The techniques used have been further developed and improved, for example a precision weeder or eco-ridger can now be used.
