The weather is changeable and the infection pressure of phytophthora is increasing. This requires a sharp approach. Growers alternate resources, plan their spraying carefully and increasingly use decision support systems.
Daan Tap from Elst has sprayed four times now and has used a different agent for each application. His choice of agents is based on the colour scheme of BO Akkerbouw and on the advice of his crop protection agent supplier. To determine the spraying moment, he uses the BOS system of Dacom, supplemented with his own estimate based on the weather and crop appearance.
Alex van Erp from Midwolda (Groningen) also works according to a fixed schedule. He determines the interval largely based on leaf wetness periods and feeling. His strategy focuses on alternation and combination of agents, whereby he works with two active substances per spraying as standard.
BOS system as a guideline
Brian Salomé from IJzendijke (Zeeland) uses different schedules for the cultivation of consumption and seed potatoes. Early in the season he avoids agents based on Shirlan in seed potatoes, because of the risk of burning in combination with oil. Only later in the season, when the foliage of the seed potatoes has died, does he add these agents. The spraying moments are coordinated via the BOS system of AgroVision and his own experience. Just like Tap, Salomé has now sprayed four times.
René Mesken from Appelscha (Friesland) reports that his earliest planted plots have now been treated three times, while the most recently planted potatoes are only now emerging. At the beginning of the season he works with milder ('vague') agents, after which he alternates between Zorvec and Infinito in the foliage growth phase, each time with a mixing partner.
In South Limburg, Ruud Steinbusch from Voerendaal uses the BOS system of Agrifirm as a guideline. His plots have now been sprayed four times. Two plots with strong foliage development have even been treated for the fifth time. His scheme includes combinations such as Vamos + Pergovi + Wetcit, Ranman, and later Zorvec + Laventa. He adds foliar fertilization to each application.
