Measuring soil bulk density while walking through the field? It's possible with a sensor: the RhoC. Karin Pepers, researcher-lecturer in the Sustainable Soil Management department at Aeres University of Applied Sciences Dronten, couldn't stop talking about the RhoC in her interview with Groen Kennisnet. The sensor is still in development, but it's already generating national and international interest.

What's so special about RhoC?
The sensor is quick and easy to use, and you get the results immediately in the field. The traditional scientific method for determining soil bulk density takes about five hours per measurement point, and is partly performed in the lab. This makes it an expensive method. And it leaves significant damage in the field: a filled-in pit at every measurement point.
"With the RhoC, anyone can eventually determine the bulk density of a soil, right in the field. In ten minutes, you can create a gouge hole just three centimeters in diameter."
