By far the most rain in the northeast of the country

16 July 2025 - Jan Willem Veldman

The (local) heavy showers, which should have brought tens of millimeters of rain, have generally failed to materialize. Here and there, you hear that the precipitation amounts in some places actually leave a lot to be desired. Based on the data from the weather stations on the plots of the Boerenbusiness The most millimeters of rain fell in the center and east of the Netherlands.

The overview of the last 24 hours (up to 16:15 PM on Wednesday, July 00th) shows that the Gewastour plots in Marknesse and Dronten (Flevoland) received the most precipitation, with 12 millimeters each. Jan Berend Biesheuvel in Zeewolde (Flevoland) received 11 millimeters of precipitation, bringing the total so far this month to 57 millimeters, according to Jan Berend. This time, it was also the turn of the eastern Netherlands to record some millimeters. The Gewastour plots in Elst and Leuth both recorded double digits.

Considerable difference between South and North Netherlands
Precipitation was particularly disappointing in the southern Netherlands. Only 2 to 4 millimeters of rain were recorded on the Gewastour plots in Zeeland. In Brabant, almost 5 millimeters fell, but on the Gewastour plots in Nederweert and Voerendaal in Limburg, it remained completely dry. Hubert Linders from Nederweert reports that he has only had 25 millimeters so far this month. Another area where rain has been bad lately is Reinder Hogenhout in Kimswerd, Friesland. His total for July is just shy of 25 millimeters. The saying "it all depends on where the showers pass" proved to be apt again this time. A little further east in Friesland, René Mesken in Appelscha reports that 60 millimeters of rain has already fallen this month. In Groningen, on the Gewastour plot of René Haaijer from Veelerveen, 65 millimeters has fallen this month. Alex van Erp from Midwolda already had 75 millimeters of snow fall this month.

Precipitation overview July

It's been a recurring phenomenon all year that the northeast of the country is receiving by far the most (desired) rainfall this year. In East Groningen, but also in parts of Drenthe, there's certainly no reason to complain about the millimeters of rain that have fallen so far this year. At the same time, the localization of the showers remains visible, even within a province. For example, a field of seed onions in the north is already starting to yield considerably. The grower in question explains: "The field was sown early and we had a good emergence. Because of this good emergence, there are many plants, which results in a thinner neck per plant." Since July 1st, an estimated only about 10 millimeters of rain has fallen. This combination of drought and a high number of plants is causing the field to begin yielding exceptionally early.

Forecast favorable for crop growth
In Groningen it is sometimes jokingly said: "When the combine goes out, the rain often doesn't stop." With the weather forecast that our weatherman at Boerenbusiness As Robert de Vries predicted yesterday (Tuesday, July 15th), the start of the grain harvest could indeed be delayed. Robert predicted a period of uncertainty. For potatoes and onions, these prospects seem favorable for the continued development of a good crop yield. However, it must be taken into account that disease pressure will also increase with these fluctuating prospects. However, the forecast is not favorable for grain threshing, which is about to begin nationwide.
