Choose yield certainty in potato cultivation in 2026

12 March 2026

Current market conditions are forcing everyone to critically examine the costs of potato cultivation. Optimizing the number of hectares available for cultivation remains crucial.

It pays to maximize yields on available land. Unfortunately, the number of available crop protection products is shrinking. Current nematicides in potato cultivation will also come under increasing pressure in the future.

A relatively new nematicide is verango, based on the active ingredient fluopyram. More experience will be gained with this this year; not only because of the availability of other products, but also because Verango offers several interesting advantages!

Verango at the base gives more yield certainty.

Effectiveness
Various species of plant-parasitic nematodes occur in potato cultivation. The yellow potato cyst nematode (Globodera Roschiensis) and the white potato cyst nematode (Pale Globodera) can cause symptoms of potato fatigue (PM).

Verango has a good effect on these potato cyst nematodes, thus safeguarding the yield. It also works well on root lesion nematodes (Pratylenchus penetrans) good effects have been established in various Dutch studies.

In England, numerous trials have shown that Verango has a comparable effect to Vydate* on free-living root nematodes (trichodorids). The effect was then assessed based on TRV (tobacco rattle virus) infestation on harvested tubers.

Root knot nematodes also play a role in several cultivation areas Meloidogyne chitwoodi en Meloidogyne fallax a role. These can have a very negative impact on quality. In 2024, research was conducted on the Vredepeel, which determined that the application of Verango can significantly reduce damage caused by M. chitwoodi.

More vital crop
Besides its nematicide effect, Verango also results in a more vigorous crop. This reduces the spread of alternaria and black spot. This always translates into a higher yield.

Positive practical experiences in 2025
Last growing season, we gained practical experience with six potato growers. In these trials, we compared the growers' standard soil treatment with the standard + Verango. Note: in some cases, the standard treatment was untreated. For the grower's potato harvest, six 4,5-meter plots were harvested in both strips. The yield was later determined.

Below are the results:

Advice | Application
Verango is a liquid product. It can be applied both across the field and as a row treatment. Even distribution throughout the soil is important.

Full field application

  • Spray the product evenly over the land with a sprayer and then work it in. The product can also be applied during tillage prior to planting.

  • Work the product in to a depth of 10-20 cm. Application can be carried out from 3 days before planting.

  • Dosage: 0,625 l/ha

Row treatment

  • Apply the product during planting in the planting furrow using equipment mounted on the planting machine

  • Can be mixed with products based on azoxystrobin (including Amistar*), fluxapyroxad (Allstar*) and Serenade. Also common liquid fertilizers are easy to mix

  • Dosage: 0,625 l/ha
Verango can be applied during potato planting.
