Southwest knows what precipitation is again after a dry year

4 May 2026 - Jan Willem Veldman

The Netherlands faced multiple rain fronts last weekend. Precipitation is still expected for the rest of the week, but it remains to be seen to what extent it will actually fall. Consequently, the rainfall from last weekend proved its worth in many places. However, the differences were significant.

On the basis of data from the weather stations on the plots of the Boerenbusiness The Crop Tour shows that the most millimeters fell mainly in the southwest. There, the total precipitation locally rose to approximately 30 millimeters.

In the Crop Tour follows Boerenbusiness twenty plots of potatoes and onions throughout the Netherlands. To properly monitor crop growth, the participating growers receive a weather station every season from AgroExact for the plot, so that precipitation and temperature can also be monitored.

The overview of the past weekend (up to Monday, May 4, 10:00 AM) shows that the weather stations recorded large differences in precipitation. The most rain fell in Philippine (28,6 mm) and IJzendijke (27 mm) in Zeeland. The rest of the Southwest Netherlands was also well served, with 21,4 and 19,8 millimeters in Wouw and Lepelstraat in Brabant, respectively. A considerable amount of precipitation also fell in the south of Limburg. In Voerendaal, the amount of precipitation rose to 16 millimeters.

Precipitation overview up to May 4

The Crop Tour plot in Appelscha (Friesland) presents a stark contrast, where only 1,4 millimeters were recorded last weekend. Elsewhere in Friesland, the total also lagged somewhat, with only 3,4 millimeters of precipitation falling in Kimswerd. Overall, the Netherlands (from north to south) fared poorly. The Crop Tour plots in Gelderland had to make do with 4 to 8 millimeters, while between 5 and 10 millimeters of precipitation were measured in Drenthe and Groningen.
