Dutch Crop tour Photo report - week 17

Arable farmers keep working on the plots

3 May 2021 - Jesse Torringa

Arable farmers have done a lot of work on the land last week. Also on the plots of the Boerenbusiness Crop tour. The potato plots were fertilized, prepared and the Innovator variety went into the ground. Weed control is central to the onion plots.

The end of April had a few sunny days and the growers of the Gewastour took full advantage of that. Especially the potato legs went at a fast pace. The precipitation of last Thursday (29 April) has brought work to a halt at some of the growers. They can now refuel and prepare for the last stretch. Where little or no rainfall has fallen, plenty of potatoes have been planted up to and including last weekend.

The growers of the Gewastour onions are certainly not standing still. The weeds are suppressed well and the growers have now carried out the second spraying. They are satisfied with the development and emergence of the seed onions, but see that the young shoots are having a hard time with the mild spring weather.

A drift cover has also been installed on the plot in Wezup. In Kimswerd (Friesland) a small crust formed, which made it difficult for the onions to emerge. This has been solved with the help of a crust crusher (see photos).
