Dutch Crop tour onions - week 22

Seed onions finally have a growth spurt

June 3, 2021 - Jesse Torringa

Now that the cold is a thing of the past, the seed onions have finally reached their growth spurt. The crop is looking a lot better than in recent weeks, but that does not apply to all onion plots.

The higher temperature in combination with the large amount of moisture has done the seed onions well in recent days. Due to the low temperature, the very effective effect of soil herbicides and sometimes hail damage, the development of the seed onions was very difficult. Even now, it seems that some plots still have to recover from the cold period.

South traditionally frontrunner
The Crop Tour plots in the south are experiencing significant growth and, as in most years, are ahead of the rest. The Crop Tour plots in the south were sown approximately 1 week earlier than the rest of the plots. You wouldn't say that given the development of the seed onions, because in the south the crop is a lot further, such as the plot in Oeffelt (North Brabant) and Ysselsteyn (Limburg) (see photos).

Dronten parcel remains behind
One of the plots that still seem to suffer from the cold period is the plot in Dronten. The growth is disappointing for the time being, according to Sophie Schieman: "It took a long time before the onions came to the surface and even now they are not making any progress. You can also see that the differences are large between the plants. One is in a different stage than the other. Not much has grown in the past week."
