Dutch Crop tour onions - week 39

Onion harvest 2021 is almost flawless

29 September 2021 - Jesse Torringa

With the recent weather conditions, the onion harvest went without too many problems. The majority of the onions have now been removed from the land and the last plots are available. At the Boerenbusiness This is clearly evident in Croptour, where the last plot is in the swath.

With the early death due to downy mildew and the good conditions, the harvest started on time. Onion growers indicated that on average they started onion at least a week earlier than in previous seasons. At one point, the drought did play a role in the harvesting of the seed onions.

Good regrowth in Wezup
In Wezup (Drenthe) it is the turn of the last onion plot of the Crop Tour. The seed onions have been harvested and it is expected that they will remain in place for a while with this week's rainfall. According to onion grower Arjen Jakobs, the field has had good regrowth: "The onions looked ordinary all year round, but the regrowth has more than made up for it. The swaths are nicely full". Jakobs is also satisfied with the size selection: "There is certainly no shortage of size. It is a very coarse batch, the majority is in 60-80 millimeters and onions over 100 millimeters are not exceptional".

There is no lack of coarseness on the plot in Wezup (Drenthe).
