Dutch Crop tour Photo report

This is how the seed onions are now growing compared to other years

5 July 2022 - Robin de Winter

Now that the bulb formation in the seed onions has started and the plants are growing strongly, comparisons can be made with the previous seasons. Is growth consistent or are there clear differences in the seed onions?

On average, the onion growers of the Boerenbusiness Dutch Crop tour sown the seed onions a week earlier than last year. The photos also show that the onions have the wig slightly larger and that the bulging has been going on for longer than last year around this time.

You cannot deduce from the images that we had a difficult spring in the seed onions. Little can be seen of the initial period with drought when compared with other years. The onions have recovered relatively well and have caught up with the warm weather that followed in this growing season. Onion grower Reinder Hogenhout from Kimswerd (Friesland) also notes that his seed onions this year are ahead of last year.
