Cosun CEO Robert Smith makes way for Markusse

Robert Smith will step down as chairman of the Executive Board of Royal Cosun on 1 June 2017. The general manager of Suiker Unie, Albert Markusse, will succeed him as CEO of Cosun. Paul Mesters succeeds Albert Markusse as general manager of Suiker Unie. 

Robert Smith took up the position of CEO of Cosun in mid-2008, having previously held the position of CFO on the Executive Board. With the strategy launched in 2012, he increased the focus within the group. Cosun is well on track. After nine years, Robert Smith feels it is time to make room for a new CEO and he wants to take the time to consider his professional future.

Cosun sugar company prepared for the disappearance of the European sugar market organisation.

Albert Markusse joined Suiker Unie in 2007. Under his leadership, Cosun's sugar company is prepared for the abolition of the European sugar market organisation. The organization is ready for the new market conditions.

After holding various positions within Suiker Unie, Paul Mesters has been active at Suiker Unie as Operations Director since 2009. In that capacity, he is a member of the management team that he will lead after his appointment as General Manager. 

The intended appointments of Markusse and Mesters have been submitted for advice to the relevant employee participation bodies.
