A mediation process will soon start to smooth the negotiations between the Belgian beet growers and Tiense Suiker.
Flemish agriculture minister Joke Schauvliege and her Walloon colleague René Collin have appointed two mediators to put an end to the protracted conflict before sowing. Board member Filip Fontaine of the BelOrta vegetable and fruit growers' cooperative and the former head of the beet planters federation CBB, Jean-Francois Sneessens, have been appointed to help the parties get out of the impasse about the disagreement in the delivery terms.
It is urgent; before sowing, the parties must be out without legal consequences. If an agreement is not reached in time, legal problems can arise, because the EU requires agreement on the purchase conditions for the beets.
These must be completed before the conclusion of the supply contracts.
