Half is in the ground

New beet season gets off to a smooth start

6 April 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude

The sowing of beets is remarkably fast. According to Cosun, more than half of the acreage is already in the ground.

In Flevoland almost everything has already been sown, but on the northeastern light soils this is only 25 percent. Due to the soil conditions, beet growers in this area have to wait a few more days. The sowing will continue smoothly this week, according to the cooperative. Things are also making good progress on the Zeeland Islands, in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and in the Noordoostpolder.

Rain and high temperature ensure smooth germination

Mechanization helps
Cosun finds it remarkable that the sowing is taking place so quickly. The capacity is very high, partly due to our own mechanization. The modern techniques used by contractors also help. More and more tractors, with seed drills, are equipped with GPS. This means that you can also sow in the dark without any problems.

Weather plays a role
Germination is progressing very smoothly due to the rain that fell last weekend and the high temperature. In the south-west of the country, the soil was well worked and the seedbed looks good everywhere.

After 116 degree days, 65.000 plants were already on top of the first sown plots in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. At Schouwen-Duiveland, the beets, sown in week 11, are all ready. There are now more than 90.000 plants counted. However, on the heavy clay in the north of the land, 7,5 hectares have been sown by mice.
