What changes with new arable farming certificates?

20 April 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude

The handbook and grower's manual for the Food and Feed Safety Certificate Arable Farming (VVAK) for the 2017/18 season are now available. It also includes some changes.

The most important changes in VVAK and the crop certificates concern the additional purchase of products, some new requirements to better match the criteria that SAI (Sustainable Agriculture Initiative) sets for sustainable cultivation, water use (e.g. sprinkling / spraying) and washing /rinse of ware potatoes. From 1 January 2017, stricter requirements in the field of compost will apply.

Sustainable Arable Farming Company
In order to guarantee the sustainability of the cultivation of industrial vegetables, the customers of industrial vegetables, who are affiliated with Vigef, will make the Sustainable Arable Farming Company (DAB) module mandatory from 2016. This concerns requirements for the sustainability of cultivation and the effect of the company on, among other things, the environment, labor and the local economy, whether or not supplemented by the RED (Renewable Energy Directive) rules.

Arable farming Certification consultation
The VVAK and the underlying crop modules are managed by the Arable Farming Certification Consultation, which is facilitated by the Arable Farming Sector Organization (BO Akkerbouw). The management of the VVAK is financed by a surcharge on the invoice from the Controlling Institution (CI) of 2,50 euros per VVAK crop module and the crop certificates per year.

The crop certificate for grains, seeds and legumes has expired with effect from the 2015/16 season. After the next inspection, the growers with the VVC GZP will receive the VVAK certificate stating the GZP module.
