Agrifirm switches to green raw materials

10 May 2017 - Wouter Baan

Agrifirm only wants to produce feed from "green" raw materials. In order to source raw materials in a responsible manner, Agrifirm has made analyzes of the social and environmental risks in countries of origin. With this, the company wants to make a sustainability move.

Together with a certified institution, Agrifirm has mapped out which environmental issues are at play in the production regions of feed raw materials. Based on these results, a realistic improvement plan is drawn up in collaboration with the producers.

The demand for raw materials is only increasing

Growing population and increasing prosperity
According to Agrifirm's director, Ruud Tijssens, the demand for raw materials is only increasing. This is due to the growing world population, in combination with increasing prosperity. Responsible choices are therefore necessary.

The tightened purchasing policy concerns the traditional feed raw materials maize, wheat and rapeseed meal. These are currently the most important raw materials for animal feed in the Netherlands. Analyzes are also made for sunflower seed meal, barley and beet pulp, the "new" feed raw materials. Initially, the tightened purchasing policy only applies to the Netherlands. At a later stage, the approach will also be implemented at the foreign branches.
