Wheat harvest above average

Drought and cold decimate EU grain harvest

23 May 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude

Due to the cold and dry conditions, the European Commission has reduced harvests in Europe. That comes out in the May Mars bulletin.

Almost all major crops are declining in yield. This is due to the dry conditions in Spain and France and the late frosts in Germany and Poland.

1,2

percent

more wheat than the five-year average

European soft wheat would come out at an average of 5.91 tons per hectare, compared to 6.05 tons last month. However, the expected yield is still higher than last year. This is in fact 6,2 percent higher and 1,2 percent higher than the five-year average.

Unfavorable weather conditions
In France, adverse weather conditions have led to a deterioration of crops. However, it seems that the rain from late April has provided some stability. Spain, on the other hand, sees the grain harvest, with the exception of maize, halve compared to last year. This is a result of the dry weather.

The recently sown grain maize seems to have suffered less from the cold and drought. The estimate for maize of 7.15 tons per hectare is almost the same as last month (7.13 tons). That is 3,9 percent more than the five-year average.
