On 9 July, CZAV received the first winter wheat of the 2017 harvest. Never before has the wheat harvest started so early in the Netherlands. It concerned a parcel of Premio winter wheat in West Brabant. The main harvest is expected to start in 2 weeks.
The wheat received had a moisture percentage of 15% or less and a weight of 80 hectoliters. The light soil plot was sown in the last week of September with the early variety Premio. The yield is more than 9 tons per hectare, CZAV reports in a press release.
Main harvest starts in 2 weeks
There are more farmers in the southwest ready to start† However, the cooperative does not expect the harvest to start for 10 to 14 days. Then the wheat is fully ripe. Even in 2 weeks we can still speak of a very early harvest. For the time being, rain is throwing a spanner in the works for the grain harvest at the beginning of this week.
Barley harvest almost ready
The winter barley harvest also started early. On June 20, CZAV received the first winter barley. Due to the summer weather, ripening went smoothly and harvested under good conditions. The collector notes that batches with high moisture contents have also been brought in. That was caused by green, not ripe, grains. Except for a single plot, all barley has been harvested, with good results on average. The moisture percentage is 15% and the hectolitre weight is above 64. The range of yields is large. Growers report 10 tons per hectare, but 6 tons also participate. Due to a lack of moisture, the crop has matured here.
Large national differences
While the first wheat is being brought in in the southwest and the barley is almost ready, the situation in the north of the Netherlands is different. Photos of twitterers show that. The barley harvest has only just started there and the wheat is still green in places.
Over the borders
Arable farmers are also threshing winter wheat in Germany, Twitter shows. In France, the harvest has been going on for some time. Heavy showers cause local flooding there. In Great Britain, arable farmers are still mainly combining winter barley and rapeseed.
