Despite exceptional weather conditions this growing season, the French wheat crop is around average. This is apparent from the first forecast released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Agreste, on Monday.
The calculations indicate a hectare yield of 7.04 tons and an area of 5.147 million hectares. Nationally, this means a production expectation of 36.2 million tons. That is 31% more than the historically low harvest of 2016 and close to the multi-year average.
There are exceptions locally. For example, the yield in Lorraine, in northeastern France, is about 20% lower due to lack of rain and frost damage. Barley has a yield forecast of 12.2 million tons, of which 9.7 million tons is winter barley and 2.5 million tons is spring barley.
Locally sometimes extremely disappointing wheat yields:
The redder the area, the greater the deviation from the five-year average
The Paris stock exchange is down
The news sends the Matif into the red. Around 14.30:180,50 PM the September contract is trading at €0,75. That is €1 lower than the close on Monday. The December and March contracts are currently at a loss of €1,25 and €XNUMX. Click here for the prices.
