Especially in the southern part of the Netherlands, the combines were able to get to work yesterday. Arable farmers are starting to harvest winter wheat for the first time, but grass seed is also still on the agenda. Further north it is still very quiet with the combine harvesters.
A special picture is noticeable during the harvest in the Netherlands. The weather pattern this growing season is splitting the country in two. The border is roughly at the height of the major rivers. Drought and heat have ensured that (cereal) crops in the south of the Netherlands have gained a significant lead.
Wheat harvest southwest started
Further north it can be seen that the grain is not that far yet. Photos of twittering arable farmers show this clearly. On Tuesday 18 July, a large-scale harvest of early wheat fields started in the southwest. Wheat was harvested sporadically in North Holland and Flevoland.
Good quality
Is an early start a good or bad sign for yield? A question that is still difficult to answer. The first sounds are on average positive. People are positive about the hectolitre weights and quality. A front with thunderstorms will pass over the Netherlands this afternoon and tonight. It will also be wet on Thursday. That will probably stop the combines for a while.

As early as half past 11 in the morning, Van Iperen in Oude-Tonge (ZH) is already busy receiving wheat.
Unfortunately, the weight on the receipt is not a hectare yield.
Wheat is also combined in North Holland.
Threshing grass seed in Zeeland Flanders.
Contractor Oomen in West Brabant is also busy harvesting grass seed.
In the meantime, the winter barley straw is being cleared in the Oldambt. The wheat has to stand here for a while.
Also in Flevoland the very early wheat can count on it.
Update 12.30: Rain has already arrived in the southwest, causing the combines to come to a standstill again.
