Wheat export Russia nears record

21 July 2017 - Kimberly Bakker

Russia will set a wheat crop of about 72 million tons. That's what several analysts say. That is almost the same as last season's record harvest. As a result, Russia may start exporting a record 30,5 million tons of wheat.

The silos in Russia are also quite well filled with the harvest from the previous season. And despite the recent price increases, the country remains the most attractive supplier of wheat in the world market.

Harvest seems to be mainly influenced by the weather

Ukraine harvests less
In Ukraine, 30% of the cereal acreage is currently harvested, with an average yield of 3.260 kilos per hectare. However, there are mixed results due to a shortage of rainwater in some regions. In other regions, harvesting is slower due to the rain of recent days.

The analysts expect a total grain harvest of 60,4 million tons. That was 64,2 million last season. Due to this decrease, there will probably be 10% to 15% less grain available for export.

Brazil
The harvest will also decrease in Brazil. The exceptional frost in the Parana region has caused considerable damage to the crops. This is especially true for wheat.
