Grain harvest halted after flying start

26 July 2017 - Niels van der Boom

Farmers in the Southwest have been able to thresh their winter wheat at breakneck speed. We worked hard, especially last Friday and Saturday. From figures that CZAV published shows that in parts of South Holland and Zeeland 50% of all wheat is already in the barn.

After an exceptionally early start, on July 9, the combines were able to really let loose at the end of last week. The fact that an enormous harvesting capacity is available is apparent from figures kept by CZAV. After 2 or 3 days of threshing, almost half of all wheat is already in the barn.

Up to 100 millimeters of precipitation
Meanwhile, rain throws a lot of spanner in the works. It was already wet, but last weekend there was again a lot of water. This is especially the case on the Zeeland islands. Vlissingen leads the way with 80 millimeters. The counter at Zuid-Beveland for July thus exceeds 100 millimeters in July. Precisely these areas were very dry.

Quality excellent
For the time being, the cooperative is positive about the quality. Hectolitre weights are at a good level, between 78 and 82. After all the rain, that is probably a little less. The first measurements showed protein levels above 11,5%. The DON content is low. The moisture percentages of the wheat already harvested are also in order.

Southwest leads the way
CZAV received the most wheat on the South Holland island of Goeree-Overflakkee and on Tholen and St. Philipsland. Both regions report 50% harvested. This is followed by Walcheren and Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Elsewhere, the percentage varies between 20 and 35%. Only the river area and the other South Holland regions are relatively behind.

Elsewhere in the Netherlands, little wheat has been harvested. In Flevoland, last Saturday, July 22, combines came out to harvest the early wheat varieties. Not all fields are ready for harvest there. A start has also been made with the wheat harvest in North Holland.
