Zeeland continues to lead the way

Good quality boost for wheat harvest

28 July 2017 - Niels van der Boom

The wheat harvested so far is at a higher quality level than last year. Agrifirm Plant concludes that in response to the wheat received so far. Especially in the south of the country, a lot is already inside. The north of the Netherlands is delayed. Partly because of the weather conditions, partly because the wheat is not ripe.

The vast majority of wheat harvested to date has a weight of between 72 and 76 hectoliters. This concerns more than 80% of all batches. 15% is above 76. Only a marginal part notes a hectolitre weight below the trading standard of 72, compared to over 40% last year. In addition to the quality, the yield is also better.

65

percent

of all the grain was harvested in Zeeland

Summer barley ripe early
Arable farmers in Zeeland, Limburg and North Brabant have already been able to thresh quite a bit. Zeeland leads the way with 65%, followed by Limburg with almost 60%. North Brabant is at 40%. In the northern provinces of Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe, the counter does not exceed 10%. This mainly concerns winter barley and rapeseed that has been harvested. The first plots of summer barley have been harvested in Drenthe. Due to the dry weather, the plots matured early.

Little wet wheat
In the south of the Netherlands, almost all wheat was harvested under dry conditions. In Limburg and Zeeland, 85% of the grain has been brought in with moisture percentages of 15% or less. In Friesland and Groningen the moisture percentage is in many cases above 16%. In the southwest, some can be harvested between the showers. It remains to be seen what effect the current rainy season will have on quality. This depends on the ripeness, Agrifirm writes.

from the last Numbers of CZAV shows that since Wednesday July 26 in South Holland and Zeeland winter wheat has been combined here and there. A lot of work has still been done, especially on the Zeeland islands. In many places half or more of all the wheat is already in there. The showery nature of the current weather is making the harvesting work somewhat more difficult.
