The level of advance prices for the 2017 harvest is higher at CZAV than in 2016. This applies to baking and feed wheat as well as barley. The cooperative has now received three quarters of the grain harvest.
CZAV pays an advance price for feed wheat of €120 per tonne, excluding VAT. For baking, milling and summer wheat that is €125 per tonne. The advance price for all barley varieties is €110 per tonne. The baking and milling wheat must have a weight of at least 76 hectoliters and a protein percentage of 12,5%. Pool or custody fees are not deducted from the amounts. Non-certified feed grain has a reduced price of €7,50.
Last year, CZAV paid €115 for feed and €122,50 for baking wheat. Barley then came in at a level of €105. In the 2015 harvest, that level was €125 (feed wheat), €132,50 (baking wheat) and €120 (barley).
Responsible advance
The company itself speaks of a 'responsible advance', which reflects current market prices, quality and market developments. Growers can then choose to sell their grains on the basis of day trade, or to do this via the pool. Any supplementary payment will follow at the end of the marketing year.
Hectare yield strongly fluctuating
On July 9, CZAV received the first wheat. Extremely early and therefore a record. Due to rain showers, the harvest has been in fits and starts since the end of July. Yields vary greatly and average 9.250 kilos per hectare. The quality is good, as are the hectolitre weight and the protein content. The grain is relatively fine, but with a low DON content.
The winter barley harvest is comparable. It also started extremely early, on June 20, and produced good quality. Yields are around the multi-year average. Yields are lower on sandy soils due to drought.
Barley quality better
It is still too early to draw conclusions about the spring barley harvest. Yields are lagging behind due to the dry spring. The quality is very variable. However, the protein content is higher than in previous years, which means that the barley is at the desired level for the brewery. The 2016 harvest was disappointing in terms of germination. CZAV hopes for a better quality, so that the premiums will also be at a higher level. This year we are experimenting with a new summer barley grass.
Three quarters harvested
The grain harvest resumed in the southwest of the country last weekend. The island of Voorne-Putten and the mainland of South Holland are relatively 'behind' with the grain harvest. CZAV records harvested percentages of 57% and 55% there. In Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, 92% is in, followed by Hoeksche Waard and Goeree-Overflakkee with 87%. Three quarters or more are indoors in 8 of the 12 regions. The average for all regions reflects that: 76%.
