The rain has led to slightly improved expectations in summer crops in the European Union in recent weeks. As a result, the EU is producing slightly more maize this growing season. The yield for wheat remains the same, although it varies between countries.
This is apparent from the harvest estimates of the Mars Bulletin of the EU, which came out on Monday 21 August. The maize yield in the European Union is slightly higher, after the south-east of the EU got rain. In the previous report, a lower harvest was assumed due to the consequences of the heat waves and the low rainfall. This weather condition lasted until early August.
Summer crops in Austria, Hungary, central Romania, Bulgaria and Greece benefited from precipitation, which means that the consequences are not too bad. Mars now assumes a yield of 6.93 tons per hectare. Nevertheless, it is still 3% lower than last year, but slightly above the 5-year average.
Wheat unchanged
The estimate for common wheat remains unchanged at 5.85 tons per hectare. This is in line with the 5-year average. However, some Northern European countries had to deal with difficult harvesting conditions. With an average hectare yield of 7.70 tons, the German wheat harvest is 3.3% below the 5-year average. Wheat yields in the United Kingdom have also been revised downwards, but are still 2.5% above average.

Quality loss in Germany
Due to harvest delays in wheat in Germany, concerns about quality are growing. The EU's second largest producer could face lower export volumes and higher feed wheat stocks.
France compares favorably with this with an upwardly adjusted estimate. The top producer is heading for an average yield of 6.96 tons per hectare, compared to 6.84 tons last month. This is still 1.6% below the 5-year average.Forecast for maize production.
