Agrifirm Plant achieves the highest organic grain prices in 11 years within their pools for oats and baking wheat. The price of wheat in particular has risen sharply compared to 2017. The supply is shrinking, while the demand is growing.
The EKO quality mark for organic oats has achieved a result of €335 per tonne in the organic grain pool. EKO baking wheat comes to €364,50 per tonne, an increase of over €25 compared to last year. With the maximum quality surcharge of €47 per tonne, the maximum price is €411,50 per tonne.
The protein contents of baking wheat were slightly lower last year, writes Agrifirm. Nevertheless, the largest part could be sold as baking wheat. The quality of oats was good. All lots were fit for consumption. On top of the prices mentioned, Agrifirm pays a member benefit of €4,50 per tonne.
Competition
An increasing demand for grain, coupled with a decreasing acreage, causes prices to rise. Organic arable farmers are more likely to opt for grass-clover or alfalfa in their cropping plan. As a result, the areas have decreased. The buyers therefore buy more and more grain from abroad.
Agrifirm expects demand to grow considerably again this year. This is mainly because more companies in the livestock sectors are switching. In its own words, Agrifirm's organic grain pool comprises 80% of the total organic grain production in the Netherlands. The largest volume consists of wheat and oats.
