In the May edition of the European Mars report, wheat yields are reduced compared to the April edition. On the other hand, the report highlights the improved weather conditions that have accelerated crop growth.
According to the report, large parts of Europe are suffering from drought. This mainly applies to the eastern countries (such as Romania and Poland), but it does not have major effects on winter grains. After all, these crops have already taken root. The newly germinating crops, such as spring wheat and barley, are seriously affected by this.
Therefore, the yield per hectare for common wheat is slightly reduced (-0,6% compared to April report). This means that the yields are still more than 3,5% higher than the 5-year average.
Good corn yields
Expectations for corn yields remain virtually the same. A yield of 7,65 tons per hectare is expected, which is well above the 5-year average. The minor delays in sowing the corn have now been made up for. This is due to the warm weather. Most maize sowing operations have been completed in Europe.
The harsh winter and wet spring mean that negative stories are circulating in France. For example, many septoria are found in wheat in particular. Still, higher wheat yields are expected.
