Does high wheat price make a difference?

17 August 2018 - Niels van der Boom - 6 comments

The wheat price is at its highest point in 4 years. Can a price level above €200 be used, and does this influence the choice of arable farmers and livestock farmers?

A price level of €150 to €170 per tonne offers little incentive to invest in wheat cultivation. Statistics Netherlands' acreage figures show a steady decline, in favor of high-yielding crops. A price above €200 makes the crop a competitor for other crops. However, it must be possible to use the price level for this. What are your expectations?

Area shifts
Wheat is described as a 'pivotal function in the Dutch construction plan' However, this has changed in the last 2 years. Yet it remains a benchmark for many crops, all of which measure themselves by the wheat price. In addition, cultivation is beneficial for the soil; especially when the straw is shredded. Will you adjust the acreage next season?

ration
A shortage of animal feed, in particular maize and cuttings, but also residual flows such as pressed pulp, potato steam peels and brewer's grains mean that livestock farmers have to redesign their rations. Wheat and wheat chunks are considered an alternative to maize. Do you adjust the ration?

If we want a good wheat price in the Netherlands, we are dependent on natural disasters/drought in Europe or the rest of the world, there is always a place in the world where harvesting is done and where harvests fall with or against, and there is always a large stock somewhere. . ie ... it is very difficult to predict with a free and very important crop .

The wheat price must be above €250 then we are still as far as in 1992 then the wheat was f 58,00 per 100 kg if anyone else knows that the fertilizer was f 18,00 per 100 kg and we will do the rest but don't talk about pesticides wages work diesel oil you name it, then we also threshed 10 tons per ha Arminda and Okapi.

No, those were the varieties from the 70's and 80's. In 1992, vivant and rhythm were the varieties

Then the mechanic came for an hour for 20 guilders, now they have been working on the laptop for 2 hours to read out at 58 euros/h = 128 guilders/h.

That 58 guilders was certainly 1982? '92 was after the actions.

For 200 euros, wheat is really interesting again. Especially compared to sugar beets that yield less than 25 euros per tonne.
I hope that as a result, French and German farmers in particular will respond to this with their acreage.
The Dutch acreage is too small to make a difference in the market

vivant is still the best variety today
