Nordzucker will start processing sugar beets on Wednesday 12 September, which is 1 week later than usual. The factory also expects lower yields due to the drought. Südzucker and Suiker Unie are also postponing the campaign.
Nordzucker, the number 2 in Europe, expects lower yields mainly in Germany, Finland, Denmark and Sweden. In addition, a number of the Danish and Finnish beet growers have already received money in advance for the beets, which means that Nordzucker wants to support the liquidity position of these growers.
Südzucker also starts later
Südzucker, the number 1 in the European Union (EU), has also announced that the campaign will start later in various factories. This is because the beets should benefit as much as possible from the expected precipitation in the coming weeks. In general, the southern regions have been less affected by the drought.
Both Nordzucker and Südzucker do not expect sugar prices to rise due to the drought. This is because the world stocks are quite large. Cosun also announced earlier that it don't expect that beet prices will again be as high as last year.
Shorter campaign
Suiker Unie released Friday 17 August already know that the beet campaign has been postponed by 1 week, which means that it will start on Tuesday 11 September. In addition to the fact that Suiker Unie will start the campaign later, it will also last shorter than previously announced. This will last approximately 19 this season and will end between 20 and 25 January.
