Agrifirm wheat pool ends at 181 euros

June 4, 2019 - Niels van der Boom

Agrifirm's grain pools have been able to benefit from a reviving post-harvest market. Unfortunately, this line was not maintained in the second half of the marketing year. Across the board, the realized wheat and barley prices are more than 15% higher, compared to the 2017 harvest.

Agrifirm will pay a basic price of €2018 per ton for feed wheat for the 181,20 harvest. In addition, a number of allowances and premiums are also paid. The maximum result that can be achieved for baking wheat is therefore €189,45 per tonne. The premium for baking wheat is €2, compared to €3 last year.

Interest payment
Agrifirm pays out €3,75 per ton in interest compensation. Participating growers who supply to the pool without an advance payment will receive this payment. This compensation was €3,10 last year. In October elevated it is all the gross advance prices. This is to improve the financial position of growers after the extreme year.

The basic price for barley is €173,50 per tonne. The brewing premium is a maximum of €20 per tonne. In addition, interest compensation and member benefits also apply here, so the pool price ends at €199,75. The growers who store themselves in the storage pool also receive a storage premium, which means that the price is often above €200 per tonne.

The sales season for this pool runs from May to May, so some of it is sold in advance. Before the harvest the price level was low. These rose sharply after the harvest, stabilizing and decreasing around the turn of the year. By its own account, the pool has benefited from the upturn. The realized price is therefore higher than the daily price that growers themselves have achieved.

Warranty plus contract
Agrifirm also has another form of sales for wheat: it Warranty plus contract. Based on the Matif, growers can 'fix' the price themselves. The grower then receives the so-called 'premium': the difference between the futures market and the physical price. According to Aart den Bakker of Agrifirm, the result has been mixed. "It depends on the grower's choice," Den Bakker explains. "There are participants who scored well, but waiting a long time did not pay off last season."
