Where are relatively most grains grown?

June 11, 2019 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 1 reaction

Arable farmers in the Netherlands sowed grains on 2018% of the arable acreage in 32,5. You immediately think that the largest area of wheat, barley and other grains is sown in the Oldambt, but is that also the case in relative terms? The new top 5 of Boerenbusiness, compiled by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), gives the answer.

The new top 5 shows that the largest grain municipalities in the Netherlands do not always have the highest percentage of grain (in relation to the total arable area) within their municipal boundaries. "The Oldambt is still just in the top 5," says Cor Pierik, head of agriculture at CBS.

In the municipality of Oldambt (Groningen), 7.641 hectares of grain have been sown, which is 72,3% of the total arable acreage. In the municipality of Sluis (Zeeland) this is 39.%, in Terneuzen (Zeeland) 37,8%, in Dronten (Flevoland) 27,3% and in the Noordoostpolder (Flevoland) 17,9%. "There, the grains play an important, but relatively small role in the arable landscape," Pierik reports.

Groningen dominates
The municipality with relatively the highest percentage of grain within the municipal boundaries is Bedum (Groningen). In this municipality, wheat or barley grows on 93,3% of the total arable acreage, or 261 hectares. This is followed by the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, where the 117 hectares of grain account for 82,2% of the arable area.

The municipality of Ten Boer (Groningen) is in third place: 78,5% of the acreage is sown with cereals (375 hectares). This is followed by 2 municipalities from Groningen: Appingedam (74,6%) and Oldambt (72,3%). In view of the difference between Oldambt (7.641 hectares) and leader Bedum (261 hectares), you should certainly see this top 5 relatively.

Dear editor
Great article.
It is a pity that the municipality of Bedum no longer exists.
This was merged into the municipality of Het Hogeland.
With regards
