Favorable crop development in EU

28 July 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

Well-distributed rainfall and relatively few hot periods have ensured favorable crop development in large parts of Europe. In Eastern Europe, heavy rainfall caused problems with ripening and harvesting of wheat.

This is reported by the JRC Mars Institute of the European Union, which reports monthly on the state of crops within and outside Europe and publishes forecasts of crop yields. For most winter and summer crops, the balance is slightly positive compared to the month of June.

Summer barley yield significantly higher
Compared to the June forecast, the biggest improvement is seen in the yield forecast for spring barley, which increased by 6,4%. At the same time, the yield forecast for wheat in the EU-27 and the United Kingdom was revised downwards again, albeit not by more than 1 percent. This adjustment is not due to the poor grain filling as a result of the drought in Western Europe in June, but to rapidly deteriorating conditions in Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary. Heavy rainfall during ripening ultimately negatively affects yields across the EU as a whole.

More potatoes and sugar beets
According to the reporters, the yield forecast for ware potatoes in the Netherlands, which is estimated at an average of 44,9 tons ware potatoes per hectare, is more than 5% higher than the 5-year average and the yield in 2019. This is due to average well-distributed rainfall. and moderate average temperatures that were normal for the time of year in recent weeks. Above-average potato yields are also expected in France and Belgium, according to the JRC Mars Institute.

Sugar beets are estimated to have a higher tonnage than the 5-year average for the same reason. On average 86,6 tons per hectare in the Netherlands. Despite the moderate number of plants as a result of the extreme germination conditions this spring. To be precise, this is 4,2% extra compared to the 5-year average and 3,2% compared to last year. In the countries around us, no more than average yields of sugar beet are expected.
