Approach to winter wheat disease control

12 May 2021

The state of winter wheat in the Netherlands is generally good. Last autumn there was plenty of opportunity to sow early.

Development has been slowed down in recent weeks due to the low temperatures. In addition, we also see some crop reaction due to the night frost at some locations. The disease pressure is generally low. There have been reports of early infestation of yellow rust, but it has not developed explosively. To this end, targeted T0 sprayings have occasionally been carried out with specific agents. On some plots we find a small infestation of Septoria.

Depending on the growing area, the winter wheat will be in stage 31–32 next week. This is the ideal time to perform the first disease control, the T1 spray.

Does spraying always make sense?
When the conditions are favorable for Septoria, longer leaf wet periods, it can develop well and eventually cause a significant loss of yield. In addition, yellow rust can also develop explosively. Experience shows that a robust spraying in stage 31-32 provides good protection against these diseases up to the flag leaf stage!

What return can be achieved?
Of course, the yield depends on the state of the crop, the choice of variety and the associated yield expectation. Often the efficiency of a scheme with T1 and T2 is looked at. It is also interesting what the effect can be of just a T1 injection.

Below the results of research in which only T1 spraying was performed.

The yield of a T1 spray varies. But if this spraying is omitted, a lot of yield can be lost. In addition, the remark that a high disease pressure of yellow rust and Septoria cannot really be recovered later!
