Nordzucker on the way to end of beet campaign

2 February 2022 - Kimberly Bakker

The final stages of Nordzucker's beet campaign have arrived. The campaign in Lithuania and Finland was completed just before the end of last year. In mid-January it was the turn of Poland and Slovakia and the last beets were processed in Germany last week. The campaigns in Sweden and Denmark will also end soon. The results are above average.

The beet campaign of the second largest sugar factory in Europe lasted 122 days. In that period, approximately 17 million tons of sugar beets were processed, of which 184.000 tons were organically grown. Sufficient and well-distributed summer rainfall in almost all European growing regions has ensured above-average beet and sugar yields," Nordzucker said in a press release. Germany had one of the highest yields ever, with an average of almost 80 tons of beets per hectare. The five-year average is 73 tons. The sugar content of our eastern neighbors was 18%.

Cosun Beet Company previously reported that it was also satisfied with the 2021 beet campaign. "It was a good campaign with an average of more than 56.000 tons of beets per day. It is the first time that the average processing capacity has exceeded 56.000 tons." like this wrote the organization two weeks ago. In the Netherlands, the carrot yield was 82,2 tons per hectare, with 16,7% sugar. This means that the sugar content is 0,6% above the level of last season. Good yields are also being discussed in Russia, India and the United States.

Good prices
"In addition to these good yields, the higher sugar prices also have a positive effect on the beet prices of the contracts with a variable pricing model," Nordzucker said in the message. These contracts will yield the best prices since the end of the sugar market regime and the prices, according to the producer, are noticeably higher than with the fixed price model. At the moment, the sugar quotation on the Liffe in Paris stands at €444 per tonne. One year ago, that was €384 per tonne in the same period.
