Historic result for cereal pool CZAV

June 14, 2022 - Jesse Torringa

The supplementary payment for the grain pool of CZAV is known. Yields per hectare were disappointing and prices have been on the rise since the 2021 harvest. The cooperative even speaks of a perfect storm on the grain market. Has the pool been able to take advantage of that?

The net price of milling and spring wheat is €265,50 per tonne. The net final price for malting barley is set at €280 per tonne. CZAV calls the price development of the grain market in the past year historic. The last growing season was already not optimal for cereals. The mild winter was fine, but the wet weather conditions and lack of sunshine resulted in disappointing yields. The average wheat yield was not far above 8 tons per hectare, the cooperative reports. The average yield was also disappointing in other parts of the world. Due to the war in Ukraine, the already heated market again made significant strides.

Final Pool Prizes
For the 2021 harvest, €267,50 per tonne was paid for baking wheat. That is €2 more than for milling and spring wheat. The price of baking wheat includes the baking premium with an HL weight of at least 76 kilograms per hectolitre and a protein percentage from 12,5%. Feed wheat yielded €258 per tonne according to the final pool prices. Wheat advances were €172 for baking wheat and €165 per tonne for feed wheat, respectively. The summer barley of the Planet variety was sold as malting barley and yielded a net price of €280 per tonne. Feed barley comes out at €245 tons per hectare. The advance of both was €160 per tonne. Unlike a number of other pools, CZAV does not charge any pool costs.

For many companies, wheat is primarily a crop for crop rotation. However, current prices are at such a level that the wheat balance is above the balance of many other crops, according to CZAV. The high prices and huge price movements are creating a whole new dynamic for growers.
