Despite the war in Ukraine with Russia, Ukrainian farmers continue to harvest. 91% of the wheat acreage has now been harvested. The harvest of other early grains is also coming to an end. However, as expected, the yields are much lower.
According to figures from the Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture, a total of 18 million in grain and pulses had been threshed in Ukraine until August 23,4. The wheat harvest is 91% behind and the yield currently amounts to 17,4 million tons of wheat from 4,3 million hectares. The barley harvest is also almost complete (96%). So far, 5,3 million tons have been brought in from 1,5 million hectares. The winter rapeseed harvest is almost ready and currently amounts to 3,1 million tons of 1,07 million hectares.
Yield estimated lower again
The Ukrainian Grain Association (UGA) made a forecast last Monday about the expected yields this year. They estimate the total yield of grains and oilseeds at 64,5 million tons. The previous forecast at the end of May was 69,5 million tons. They estimate the wheat harvest at 19 million tons this season, compared to 33 million tons last year in the record season.
The decrease in yield is based on the additional decrease in the number of hectares from which crops are harvested. Despite Ukrainian farmers doing everything they can to continue the harvest, there are clearly obstacles such as mines, occupied territories or plots that have been badly affected by the fighting. In total, this is 1 million hectares less than the previous harvest estimate, which explains the decrease.
The UGA assumes a wheat yield of 19 million tons. That is more than 42% less than last season when a yield of 33 million tons of wheat was achieved. The decrease is mainly due to the much smaller acreage. They also see a large drop for maize from 37,6 million tons last year to 24 million tons this year. Barley yields have also nearly halved from 10,1 million tons to 5,4 million tons according to the UGA's forecast.
