This is what the pool prices of grain at Agrifirm do

26 May 2023 - Jesse Torringa

Agrifirm has announced the grain pool prices for the 2022 harvest. The grain market was historically high during the harvest, but has collapsed considerably in recent months. What do Agrifirm's pool prices amount to?

The pool price for feed wheat with an advance is €292,50 per ton. Without an advance, that is € 5,10 more. This means that the pool price is more than €30 per ton higher than that of the 2021 harvest. The storage pool is lower with a result of €263,50 per ton. For baking wheat with a hectolitre weight of at least 76 kilos, the pool price is €296 per ton, including an advance payment. Without an advance, baking wheat breaks through the magical limit of €300 per ton. The storage pool of baking wheat amounts to €267 per tonne. On top of these prices, Agrifirm pays €4 per tonne of member benefits. Despite the declining grain market

Multiple barley price impulses
The base pool of malting barley amounts to €268,50 per ton. The brewing premium could increase by a maximum of €50 to €318,50 per tonne. Barley prices normally follow that of the wheat market and had risen as a result of the war in Ukraine. But increased beer consumption (the recovery after the corona years) and the low stocks of 2021 also boosted barley prices this year. These stocks have now been well replenished, Agrifirm states in a statement.

The grain harvest started early and the yields for 2022 were average to very good. Depending on the region and soil type, wheat yields of well over 10 tonnes per hectare were regularly measured. This was true for both barley and wheat. The drying costs were - in contrast to 2021 - a lot lower due to the perfect conditions during the harvest.

Markt
As smooth and easy as the harvest went, the market was one that was full of uncertainties. The Russian invasion of Ukraine was the reason for this and still has a major influence on the price development of grains. The price of grain has now been reduced considerably, especially since the turn of the year. While the price for wheat was still well above €300 per ton during the harvest, it is now around €220 per ton. Agrifirm also reports in a press release that the acreage of grain in the Netherlands and other important growing areas has been expanded this season. However, many European countries have to deal with a late and poor spring.
